Aberdare found itself tested when it hosted  the Final  of the East Glam Summer Cup against the might of Caerphilly

Out graded  on all boards Aberdare gave a good account of themselves but finally succumbed  to the stronger Team

However Steve Woodrow ensured it was  no  white wash by drawing his  game

Another win in the East Glamorgan Summer Cup!
24 July 2006

Aberdare travelled to Penarth in the Semi-Final of the Summer cup on a hot summer's evening.  The chess played also lived up to the hot weather with some scorching games.

Philip calmly defended against an aggressive attack by Tony Gutteridge which eventually went nowhere and Philip gained a massive winning advantage to put Aberdare 1-0 up early in the proceedings

David had an early advantage against Ken Hannah which he eventually pressed home after some wild sacrificial play by both sides - Ken eventually making a terminal mistake  in a position that was lost for him in any case.  This result secured the win for Aberdare after a quiet game by Steve on board 4 was drawn to put Aberdare 1.5-0.5 ahead.

Graham's game was always difficult for him after he played a line against an opponent that he had played earlier in the season against the same opponent. Sadly the game depressingly went the same way and Graham resigned when the match was secured by Aberdare.

Penarth A (1.5) - Aberdare Wasps (2.5)

T. Gutteridge 0-1  P. French
K. Hannah    0-1  D. Llewellyn

At least Aberdare didn't need Penalties

12 July 2006

After much arrangement kafuffle, Aberdare eventually travelled to Cardiff to play their B team in the Summer KO Cup. The match had been scheduled for 5/7 but had been re-arranged at Cardiff’s request in order that their members could watch England’s expected semi-final appearance in the World Cup. This was evidently never going to transpire, the words hell, when & freeze over came to my mind, but their request was met. The match went to plan with Philip taking an early advantage so allowing Dave & Steve on 2 & 3 to take early-ish draws. Philip then proceeded to press home his advantage and win. Although Simon’s result was then irrelevant to the overall score, he refused to offer a draw. Having given up several pieces, he wanted to see home his attack. This led to his opponent resigning under some pressure & in time trouble resulting in a 3-1 victory with no defeats. The only ingredient missing was a Zinedine Zidane type assault, but the atmosphere proved too cordial for violence.

New and Old Players

17 June 2006

Aberdare travelled to Newport to play their next round in the Welsh Open Cup last played  6 months earlier against Nidum (Neath)

However finding the venture was an event in itself

David and Philip had directions giving to them but from two different junctions of the M4 while

Mike’s GPS system seem to be playing up

Steve, who had been to venue before with Mike was the driver and tried to recall location having visited Newport town recently

Eventually though the Team did arrive but  found two of the Newport players were in fact previous acquaintances as they also play for the Penarth Club in the local East Glamorgan League !!

Aberdare have in recent times used a rotation policy with players while board order can be changed ( if the  grades are within the accepted margin of 100 points )yet David ( Captain) following the  Summer Cup board order incorrectly placed Philip on board 2

However, all the games were played with passion and character

David nullified Varley's early attack and obtained a piece but did not play the best line and game ended in draw

Philip rode the early storm and was also offered a draw

Steve lost a piece and his attack eventually faltered while Mike found his position slowly deteriorate to the point where he could not resist any longer

Newport                v              Aberdare

P. Varley            draw           D. Llewellyn

R. Taylor             draw           P. French

T. Gutteridge    1  v  0           S. Woodrow

N. Granville       1  v  0           M. Woodrow

Seconds Out Round One

10 May 2006

Barry B travelled to Aberdare in the Summer Open Cup although some thought it was in the Under 1500 cup and were surprised to find it was not!!

Barry battled bravely but perhaps in some cases battled too far when surrender would have been more honourable.

Board 1 saw W. Lambert of Barry up against David Llewellyn.  Lambert made several early mistakes that saw Dave take a large advantage.  Lambert continued with more mistakes until he eventually resigned.

Board 2 was a contest between G. Fitzmuss of Barry and Philip French.  Philip took an early advantage and continued to improve his position.  Fitzmuss continued to mount a rearguard action but finally lost on time in a lost position.

Board 3 resulted in the closest match between D. Mahoney of Barry and Steve Woodrow.  Steve eventually won a close fought contest that required him to find some accurate defence in a game that could have gone either way

Board 4 was a comfortable win for Mike Woodrow against S. White of Barry.  Mike won the game on time as his opponent misjudged the time control and overstepped the limit, however Mike had a far superior position and would have expected to win from there in any case.

Aberdare Wasps      v           Barry B
D.Llewellyn           1  v   0     W.Lambert
P.French                1  v   0    G.Fitzmuss
S.Woodrow           1  v   0     D.Mahoney

Malpas prove a Boogie Team yet again.

Welsh Chess Union Under 1800 Cup Semi – Final

24 May 2006

Aberdare travelled to Malpas for the 3rd time in 3 years determined to reverse their last two loses.

However things didn't go to plan.

First to finish was Mike, who offered a draw in a tricky situation but further analysis showed a win very possible.

Steve battled on board 1 but an earlier mistake proved fatal.

Simon & Graham had to win.

Although in time trouble, Simon’s scintillating attack proved too strong & his opponent resigned after having his Queen pinned to King.

Which set up a blistering finale for Graham who was slightly down on material and defending a very dangerous passed pawn on the sixth rank.

His good play won a piece and, with his opponents King exposed, a draw would be easily gained…. But this was not enough !!

Both players faced extreme time trouble… and spectators saw a 2 move mating attack for Graham… he picked up his Queen… the audience drew breath….but he couldn't resist the check move which allowed the King to escape…  his flag fell soon after !!!

If we draw Malpas away again next year, something fishy is going on!!!

Visit from The Champions

3 November 2005
