Match Report

Konica Cup 1st Round – Saturday 27 October 2007

Llanhilleth 03pts

Aberdare 11pts

After their tremendous win I the preliminary round of the cup Aberdare were drawn away against Llanhilleth who lay in Division Five East.  This was the first ever game between both Clubs.

Aberdare took the opportunity to ‘blood’ some of their Youth side during this game and as a result we found two sets of brothers in the pack, with Calum and Luke Brennan packing down in the second row, and Chris and Anthony Watts occupying the open side and blindside flanker positions.  Both of the young players being a credit to the Youth Section and played a standard of rugby far above their young age.

The game started as a typical cup match with both side playing the majority of the first half between the 22’s.  Aberdare were first to open the scoring when after a fine passage of play involving most of the players handling the ball is was left wing James Furey who crossed in the corner for five points; Charlie Roberts was unable to add the extra point from the difficult angle.  Llanhilleth 0 – Aberdare 5.

The home side were then awarded a successful penalty which narrowed the gap to two points, Llanhilleth 3 – Aberdare 5.

During the second half Charlie Roberts added two further penalties to seal the game at Llanhilleth 3 – Aberdare 11.
